Delhi Postpones Artificial Rain Plan

The Delhi government has delayed its proposed cloud-seeding operation to induce artificial rain as pollution levels in the city and NCR remain in the “very poor” to “severe” range. The plan, which was scheduled between July 4 and July 11, aimed to provide temporary relief from toxic smog.

Weather Conditions Not Favourable

Officials said the cloud-seeding project, undertaken with IIT Kanpur and the India Meteorological Department, requires precise weather conditions including cloud depth, humidity and wind patterns. Current conditions do not support the operation, leading to its postponement.

Infrastructure Prepared but On Hold

The Delhi government has prepared the operational infrastructure, including aircraft and seeding chemicals, but will only proceed when meteorological conditions align. Until then, residents remain exposed to high pollution levels.

Experts Warn of Limitations

Experts caution that while artificial rain may provide short-term respite, it cannot replace long-term measures such as cutting emissions from vehicles, industries and stubble burning. The project remains a part of Delhi’s broader air quality management plan.
