Delhi Ministers Orders Tougher Water Pipeline Checks

The Delhi government has directed the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) to step up inspections and monitoring of the city’s water supply pipelines to prevent contamination and protect public health. The move aims to strengthen water safety across the national capital.

New Inspection Measures

Delhi’s Water Minister Parvesh Verma instructed the DJB to intensify regular inspections of all water supply pipelines, especially in areas where drinking water lines run close to sewer lines that can increase the risk of contamination. The directive calls for identifying and repairing leaks, damages, and any potential points of cross-contamination without delay.

The order also mandates that pipeline inspections and water quality monitoring be carried out frequently from treatment plants to end-user taps. The DJB is expected to deploy dedicated teams for round-the-clock vigilance in densely populated and vulnerable areas to ensure safe drinking water distribution.

Response to Public Concerns

The directive comes amid heightened public concern over water quality in parts of Delhi. Officials have been told to act promptly on public complaints related to water odour, taste, discolouration, or suspected contamination, verifying the issues on the ground and taking corrective action as quickly as possible.

Infrastructure audits to identify weak or ageing sections of the pipeline network will also be prioritised, with prompt repairs or replacements recommended to prevent untreated or external contaminants from entering the drinking water system.

Government Monitoring

The Delhi Jal Board’s Chief Executive Officer will personally oversee the implementation of the inspections, complaint redressal, and water quality test outcomes. The intensified checks are meant to strengthen confidence in water safety for Delhi residents.
