Delhi Himachal Police Clash Over Youth Congress Arrests
A confrontation unfolded between the Delhi Police and Himachal Pradesh Police over the arrest and transfer of three Youth Congress workers linked to a shirtless protest at the India AI Impact Summit. The incident escalated into an interstate police dispute, including mutual accusations and counter-FIRs, before the situation eased after court proceedings.
Delhi Police Himachal Police Clash Over Youth Congress Arrests
A team from the Delhi Police Special Cell arrested three Indian Youth Congress activists in Himachal Pradesh’s Rohru area in connection with a protest during the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi. As the team attempted to bring the accused back to the capital, Himachal Pradesh Police intercepted them near Shoghi barrier, alleging the arrests were made without proper local notification or legal procedure. The state police detained members of the Delhi Police and later released them after legal intervention. A counter-FIR was filed by Himachal Police against unidentified personnel of the Delhi team, accusing them of kidnapping in connection with the arrests. This marked a rare police vs police standoff between two state forces.
Himachal Police FIR Against Delhi Police Officers
Himachal Pradesh Police lodged a criminal case against Delhi Police officers, asserting that the three Youth Congress workers were taken into custody without informing the local law enforcement and without necessary documentation. The FIR alleged that the Delhi team did not follow procedural requirements for interstate arrest, prompting the Himachal force to register the case against the officers as unidentified persons. The move intensified scrutiny of the police action and highlighted procedural expectations for cross-jurisdiction enforcement in India.
Court Proceedings And Transit Remand Outcome
The dispute led to extended legal proceedings in a local court in Shimla, where the three arrested Youth Congress workers were presented and granted transit remand to be taken to Delhi for further legal process. Following these proceedings, the Delhi Police team was permitted to leave with the arrested individuals. The incident underscored tensions between state law enforcement agencies when dealing with politically sensitive arrests far from their home jurisdiction.
