Delhi HC Protects Amitabh Bachchan’s Identity

The Delhi High Court has granted permanent protection to veteran Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan’s personality rights, restraining several individuals and entities from commercially exploiting his name, image, voice and likeness without permission. Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav passed the order on November 5, 2026, disposing of a lawsuit filed by the actor in 2022.

Delhi High Court Grants Permanent Injunction

The court issued a permanent injunction against defendants involved in the unauthorised commercial use of Bachchan’s identity.

Four defendants reached settlements with the actor, acknowledging his publicity and privacy rights and agreeing to discontinue the disputed activities.

These included Rajat Nagi, who developed an application called Amitabh Bachchan Video Call, and Manoj Publications, which published a general knowledge book featuring his photograph.

The other defendants included Tamatina, which sold posters displaying Bachchan’s images, and Mahesh Patel, who registered a domain name bearing the actor’s identity.

Amitabh Bachchan’s Name, Image and Voice Protected

Under the settlement agreements, the defendants undertook not to use Bachchan’s name, photographs, voice, likeness or other identifiable personality attributes without his express consent.

The agreements also extend to their legal heirs, representatives and business successors.

The court separately issued a decree against four defendants who failed to appear or submit written statements despite receiving summons.

Court Extends Protection Against Unidentified Infringers

The injunction also covers unidentified individuals and entities, commonly referred to as John Does, involved in unauthorised commercial exploitation of Bachchan’s personality.

The court recognised that such activities could occur through websites, mobile applications, merchandise and messaging platforms.

Bachchan had earlier secured an interim injunction on November 25, 2022, protecting his personality rights while the lawsuit remained pending.

The latest judgment makes those protections permanent against the defendants covered by the decree. The actor may initiate fresh legal proceedings if further violations arise.
