Delhi HC Orders Action on Salman Khan’s Personality Rights Plea

The Delhi High Court has directed major social media platforms and online intermediaries to act on a petition filed by actor Salman Khan, who sought protection of his personality rights. The court ordered that his grievance be treated as a formal complaint and asked platforms to respond within three days.

Allegations of Misuse of Identity

Khan’s petition alleges that several online entities have been using his name, photographs, voice, likeness and dialogues without consent. He said such unauthorised usage misleads consumers, harms his brand and creates false impressions of endorsements.

Court Signals Interim Action

Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora said the court would also pass a detailed interim order against non-intermediary entities, including websites and sellers allegedly offering unauthorised merchandise featuring the actor’s image. The court stressed that personality rights must be safeguarded in the digital ecosystem.

Rising Trend of Personality Rights Cases

The case adds to a growing list of petitions by celebrities seeking protection of their digital identity. Courts across India have increasingly intervened to curb misuse of celebrity attributes, especially as online impersonation and merchandise sales rise.

Next Steps

The respondents have been asked to comply with the order and report back on measures taken. The matter will be heard again after initial responses are filed.
