Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Gets Z-Security After Attack

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was attacked during her weekly Jan Sunwai (public grievance hearing) at her Civil Lines residence. The assailant, identified as Rajesh Sakariya from Rajkot, approached her posing as a petitioner before suddenly slapping her and pulling her hair. Security personnel immediately restrained him, but Gupta suffered injuries to her head and hands and was taken to hospital for treatment.

Police Action and Case Registered

The Delhi Police filed a case of attempted murder and placed the attacker under five-day police remand for interrogation. Investigators are examining whether the assault was a lone act or part of a broader conspiracy. Initial reports suggest the accused had conducted surveillance of Gupta’s residence in the days before the attack.

Political Reactions

The incident drew widespread condemnation across the political spectrum. Rekha Gupta called it a “cowardly attempt to disrupt public service”, vowing to continue engaging directly with citizens. BJP leaders accused opponents of orchestrating the attack, while opposition parties, including the Aam Aadmi Party, condemned the violence and expressed solidarity.

Security Measures Strengthened

In response, Gupta’s security cover has been upgraded to Z-category protection, managed by a combination of CRPF, Delhi Police, and NSG units. About 22–25 commandos will now provide round-the-clock protection. Access to her during public hearings will be more tightly controlled, with enhanced surveillance systems deployed at her residence.

Implications for Public Engagement

The attack has raised questions about the safety of elected leaders during open public interactions. While security protocols are being reviewed, Gupta and her party maintain that citizen outreach programs will continue, though under stricter safeguards.
