Delhi Cabinet Approves Metro Expansion with 13 New Stations

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved a major expansion of the Delhi Metro network under the Phase V(A) project. The decision clears the construction of 13 new metro stations along three new corridors over the next three years, with the aim of improving connectivity and extending the rapid transit system in the national capital.

Scope and cost of the project

The new phase will add about 16 kilometres of metro lines at an estimated cost of Rs 12,015 crore. The expansion is expected to take the total length of the Delhi Metro network beyond 400 kilometres, reinforcing its role as a key mode of urban transport.

New corridors and stations

The expansion includes three corridors: one from R.K. Ashram Marg to Indraprastha, another linking Aerocity to IGI Airport Terminal-1, and a third from Tughlakabad to Kalindi Kunj. Of the 13 new stations, 10 will be underground and three will be elevated. These corridors will improve access to central areas, airport terminals and southern parts of Delhi.

Expected benefits

Officials said the project will enhance daily commuting, reduce road congestion and lower vehicle emissions by encouraging greater use of public transport. The expansion is also expected to support economic activity by providing better access to key commercial zones and residential areas.

Government outlook

Transport authorities and ministers highlighted the expansion as part of ongoing efforts to modernise urban infrastructure and meet the growing demand for efficient public transit in one of India’s busiest metropolitan regions. Detailed planning and execution will be overseen by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, with completion anticipated within three years.
