Delhi BMW Crash: Woman Arrested After Official’s Death

A 52-year-old deputy secretary in the Union Finance Ministry, Navjot Singh, died on Sunday after a BMW car driven by Gaganpreet Kaur allegedly rear-ended the motorcycle he was riding with his wife near the Delhi Cantonment metro station.

Key Facts

The accident happened when Singh and his wife Sandeep Kaur were returning from Bangla Sahib Gurdwara, via RK Puram, in the afternoon. The BMW reportedly hit their bike from behind. The car overturned after impact. Sandeep Kaur sustained serious injuries. She told police she repeatedly asked Gaganpreet to take them to the nearest hospital, but was instead taken about 19-20 km away to NuLife Hospital in GTB Nagar. It later emerged that NuLife Hospital is co-owned by Gaganpreet’s family. The driver, Gaganpreet Kaur (38), and her husband, Parikshit Makkar, who was in the car, have been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, rash driving, and destruction or concealing of evidence. Gaganpreet was arrested today from the hospital in GTB Nagar, where she had been admitted with minor injuries following the crash.

Statements & Allegations

Singh’s son, Navnoor Singh, believes that his father might have survived if medical attention had been sought at a closer hospital immediately after the crash. The family alleges attempts were made to tamper with evidence, including medical reports. The hospital’s management has stated that all protocols were followed.

Background

Navjot Singh served as Deputy Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs under the Union Finance Ministry. He was reportedly handling work related to the United Nations Development Programme among other projects. His father, retired Air Force officer Balwant Singh, said Navjot had been due for promotion in six months.

Investigation Status

The police are investigating whether there was negligence in taking the injured to a hospital far from the accident site and if evidence was tampered with at the hospital. Gaganpreet faces FIR charges including culpable homicide, rash driving, destruction of evidence and concealing information.
