Delhi AQI Turns Severe As Dense Fog Hits Travel
Delhi’s air quality slipped into the “severe” category as the Air Quality Index crossed the 400 mark in several parts of the city. Monitoring stations reported hazardous pollution levels, with poor dispersion conditions and winter weather contributing to the sharp deterioration. Authorities said the combination of low wind speed, high moisture and emissions led to the build-up of pollutants across the National Capital Region.
Dense Fog Reduces Visibility Nationwide
A thick layer of fog blanketed large parts of north India, significantly reducing visibility during early morning hours. The fog impacted road, rail and air travel, particularly in Delhi and neighbouring states. Visibility at times dropped to near zero, creating unsafe conditions for commuters and transport operators.
Flight Operations Disrupted At Major Airports
Low visibility conditions affected flight operations at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, with several departures and arrivals delayed. Airlines issued advisories asking passengers to check flight status before leaving for the airport and to expect possible delays. Airport authorities said operations were continuing under low visibility procedures, which can slow down traffic movement.
Government And Health Advisories Issued
Authorities urged people to limit outdoor activity, especially children, elderly individuals and those with respiratory conditions. Residents were advised to use masks where necessary and follow health guidelines. Officials said pollution levels are expected to remain high until weather conditions improve.
