Delhi Airport Announces ₹5,625 Crore Expansion Plan to Boost Capacity
Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) has proposed a capital expenditure of ₹5,625 crore over the next five years to enhance infrastructure and increase passenger handling capacity at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA). This plan has been submitted to the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority of India (AERA) for approval.
The expansion strategy includes converting Terminal 3’s Pier C for international operations, refurbishing Terminal 2, and constructing a new Pier E at Terminal 3 dedicated to domestic flights. Additionally, new parking stands for Code E and C aircraft are planned to accommodate the anticipated rise in air traffic.
DIAL projects that IGIA will reach full international capacity utilization by the fiscal year 2025-26. To manage the expected increase in passenger numbers, the completion of Pier E by FY2028 is expected to add a capacity of 10 million passengers per annum (MPPA), ensuring the airport can meet future demands.
This proposed investment is part of a broader initiative to modernize airport infrastructure across India. A report by CRISIL indicates that Indian airports are expected to invest approximately ₹60,000 crore by FY2027 to accommodate growing passenger traffic, reflecting a 12% increase in capital expenditure.
The proposed expansion at Delhi Airport aligns with the government’s vision to enhance air connectivity and infrastructure, supporting the country’s rapidly growing aviation sector.
