Defence Ministry to Finalize Prachand LCH Deal by March 2025

In a significant move aimed at bolstering India’s aerial combat capabilities, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has announced its plan to finalize the procurement of 156 units of the Prachand Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) by March 2025. This ambitious initiative will address the operational requirements of the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the Indian Army, enhancing their preparedness for diverse combat scenarios.

Indigenous Development of Prachand LCH

The Prachand LCH, developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), is a state-of-the-art combat helicopter designed to perform operations in extreme altitudes and adverse environments. Equipped with advanced weaponry, sensors, and systems, the helicopter is capable of neutralizing a variety of threats, including enemy tanks, bunkers, and unmanned aerial vehicles.

With the ability to operate effectively in high-altitude conditions, such as the Himalayan region, the LCH has proven to be a valuable asset for safeguarding India’s northern and northeastern borders.

Addressing Armed Forces’ Needs

The procurement process will prioritize the allocation of 66 helicopters for the Indian Air Force and 90 for the Indian Army. This decision underscores the government’s commitment to equipping the armed forces with indigenous and cutting-edge technologies to meet modern combat demands.

A senior official remarked, “The Prachand LCH is a crucial addition to our defense arsenal, offering unmatched operational flexibility and enhanced lethality in high-altitude and challenging environments.”

Boost to Self-Reliance in Defense

This acquisition aligns with the government’s vision of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India), emphasizing the development and procurement of indigenous defense platforms. The contract is expected to provide a significant boost to India’s domestic defense manufacturing sector, fostering innovation and creating employment opportunities.

By finalizing the procurement of Prachand LCHs, the Ministry of Defence aims to reinforce the armed forces’ ability to respond to emerging threats while strengthening India’s defense posture in the region.
