
Defence Ministry Orders Eight Dornier-228 Aircraft
The Ministry of Defence has approved the acquisition of eight Dornier-228 aircraft from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to strengthen surveillance and operational capabilities.

The procurement, valued at about ₹2,312 crore, will add additional utility aircraft to support transport, reconnaissance and maritime roles. The Dornier-228 is a twin-turboprop aircraft designed for short-takeoff operations and can operate from varied terrains.
Officials said the aircraft will be used for logistics support, communication duties and monitoring missions.
HAL Indigenous Aircraft Manufacturing
The aircraft will be supplied by HAL under domestic production arrangements, reinforcing indigenous defence manufacturing. The order supports local aerospace industry capacity and maintenance infrastructure within the country.
Authorities highlighted the purchase as part of efforts to increase reliance on domestically produced equipment.
Surveillance And Operational Capability Upgrade
The addition of new aircraft is expected to improve mobility and situational awareness for defence operations. The platform can be deployed for coastal surveillance, transport and training purposes.
Delivery timelines and operational integration will follow contractual procedures after finalisation.\
