Defence Ministry Inks ₹13,500 Crore Deal for Su-30MKI Fighter Jets

In a significant boost to India’s air defence capabilities, the Ministry of Defence has signed a ₹13,500 crore agreement with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the procurement of 12 Su-30MKI fighter jets. This contract marks another milestone in India’s push for indigenization and self-reliance in defence production under the ‘Make in India’ initiative.

Advanced Features and Local Manufacturing

The Su-30MKI jets will be manufactured by HAL, featuring state-of-the-art avionics and weapon systems tailored to meet the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) requirements. These multi-role fighters, originally developed by Russia’s Sukhoi Design Bureau, will include advanced indigenous components and upgrades.

HAL’s facilities in Nashik and Koraput will spearhead the manufacturing process, ensuring significant local content in the aircraft, contributing to India’s growing aerospace industry.

“The Su-30MKI jets have proven their mettle in various operational scenarios. The inclusion of advanced indigenous systems will further bolster their effectiveness,” an official source stated.

Enhancing Air Power

The IAF, already operating over 260 Su-30MKI aircraft, will further strengthen its fleet with these new additions. Known for their versatility, long-range capabilities, and ability to carry advanced weapon systems, these jets play a pivotal role in safeguarding India’s airspace and asserting strategic dominance in the region.

This procurement comes at a crucial time when the government is focusing on modernizing the armed forces amid increasing regional security challenges.

Alignment with Self-Reliance Goals

The deal aligns with the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) mission, aimed at reducing dependency on foreign defence imports. Defence experts have lauded the agreement as a step forward in bolstering domestic manufacturing capabilities and promoting innovation in the defence sector.

The first batch of the newly acquired Su-30MKIs is expected to roll out within the next few years, with HAL committed to timely delivery and quality assurance.

This contract underscores India’s commitment to equipping its armed forces with cutting-edge technology while fostering growth in its indigenous defence manufacturing ecosystem.
