Defence Acquisition Council Approves ₹21,772 Crore for Military Upgrades
The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, has granted Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for five capital acquisition proposals totaling over ₹21,772 crore. These approvals aim to bolster India’s defense capabilities across the Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard.
Procurement of Water Jet Fast Attack Crafts
The DAC has approved the procurement of 31 new Water Jet Fast Attack Crafts for the Indian Navy. These vessels are designed for low-intensity maritime operations, surveillance, patrol, and search and rescue missions near the coast. They will also play a crucial role in anti-piracy operations, particularly around India’s island territories.
Acquisition of Fast Interceptor Crafts
In addition, the council has sanctioned the procurement of 120 Fast Interceptor Crafts. These versatile vessels are capable of escorting high-value units such as aircraft carriers, destroyers, frigates, and submarines, thereby enhancing coastal defense.
Electronic Warfare Suite for Su-30 MKI
The DAC has approved the acquisition of an advanced electronic warfare suite for the Indian Air Force’s Su-30 MKI aircraft. This suite includes external airborne self-protection jammer pods, next-generation radar warning receivers, and associated equipment. The integration of this system will enhance the operational capabilities of the Su-30 MKI, providing protection against enemy radars and associated weapon systems during missions targeting adversary assets shielded by air defense systems.
Induction of Advanced Light Helicopters
The council has also approved the procurement of six Advanced Light Helicopter Mk-III (Maritime Role) variants for the Indian Coast Guard. These helicopters are expected to strengthen coastal security and enhance surveillance in maritime regions.
Overhaul of Defense Assets
To extend the service life of critical defense assets, the DAC has granted approval for the overhaul of the Indian Army’s T-72 and T-90 tanks, BMP infantry fighting vehicles, and the engines of Sukhoi fighter aircraft. This initiative aims to maintain the operational readiness and longevity of these platforms.
These approvals reflect India’s commitment to modernizing its defense forces and enhancing indigenous defense manufacturing capabilities, aligning with the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative.
