Deadly Accident Involving School Bus
More than 10 people were killed after a school bus was involved in a serious road accident in Colombia, authorities said on Sunday. The bus, which was carrying students and adults, crashed in a mountainous area, leading to a major rescue operation by emergency services. Several others were injured and rushed to nearby hospitals, with some reported to be in critical condition.
Local officials confirmed that the victims included schoolchildren, making the incident one of the deadliest road accidents involving students in recent months. The exact number of casualties was still being verified as rescue teams continued to recover bodies from the crash site.
Bus Fell Into Ravine
According to initial findings, the bus lost control while travelling along a narrow and winding road before plunging into a ravine. Poor road conditions and difficult terrain are believed to have complicated rescue efforts. Firefighters, police, and medical personnel worked for hours to assist survivors and retrieve the injured.
Authorities said the bus was returning from a school-related trip when the accident occurred. Weather conditions at the time were also being examined as part of the investigation.
Investigation Underway
Colombian transport and police authorities have launched a formal investigation to determine the cause of the crash. Officials are examining whether mechanical failure, driver error, or road conditions contributed to the tragedy. The government has extended condolences to the families of the victims and assured support for medical treatment and relief efforts.
The incident has renewed concerns over road safety in rural and hilly regions of the country.
