Danish MP Criticises US After Canada Aircraft Tariff
A Danish Member of Parliament criticised the United States after President Donald Trump threatened to impose a 50 per cent tariff on Canadian-made aircraft sold in the United States. The tariff threat is part of a growing trade dispute between the US and Canada over aircraft certification issues between the two countries.
Trump’s Tariff Threat Explained
Trump said the tariff would apply unless Canada certified certain American-made Gulfstream jets for use there. He also threatened to withdraw certification of Canadian aircraft, including models from major manufacturer Bombardier, in what has become an escalating trade conflict with Canada.
Danish MP’s Reaction
Danish Conservative MP Rasmus Jarlov responded by advising countries to reduce dependence on American military products and equipment. He questioned the wisdom of purchasing certain US defence aircraft and suggested that European countries should look to diversify away from American suppliers to avoid being “extorted” in trade disputes.
Broader Trade Tensions
The tariff threat has added strain to US-Canada relations, with Ottawa calling for fair trade practices and Washington pushing for reciprocal certification. The situation reflects wider disagreements over regulatory standards and market access in the aerospace sector.
