DAC May Clear S-400, BrahMos Defence Deals

India’s Defence Acquisition Council is expected to consider a series of major procurement proposals covering air defence, strike capability, transport aircraft and new-age unmanned systems, in what could become one of the most significant defence clearance rounds of the year.

DAC May Clear Major Defence Deals

The meeting, chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, is likely to take up key proposals aimed at strengthening the capabilities of all three services. Among the most important items on the agenda are additional S-400 air defence systems, extended-range BrahMos cruise missiles, unmanned combat aircraft and medium transport aircraft for the Indian Air Force.

S-400, BrahMos And Combat Drones In Focus

One of the biggest expected proposals is for five more S-400 air defence units, which would further strengthen India’s layered air defence network. The council is also likely to consider extended-range BrahMos missiles for the Army, giving it stronger long-range precision strike capability. Another major item is the proposal for indigenous unmanned combat jets, reflecting India’s push towards next-generation warfare systems and reduced dependence on imported platforms over time.

Transport Aircraft And Wider Modernisation Push

The DAC is also expected to discuss the acquisition of around 60 medium transport aircraft, a requirement seen as important for replacing ageing fleets and improving logistics capacity. Reports have suggested that global manufacturers such as Embraer, Lockheed Martin and Ilyushin could be among the contenders if the programme moves forward. The broader agenda is being seen as part of India’s larger effort to modernise its armed forces amid evolving regional security challenges.
