Cyclone Senyar Brings Heavy Rain Alert To South India
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued heavy-to-very-heavy rain alerts across multiple South Indian states as a low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal intensifies and is likely to develop into Cyclone Senyar. The alert covers Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh (including Rayalaseema and Yanam), the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep.
Expected Rainfall Timeline
Tamil Nadu is forecast to receive heavy rain from November 25 to 30, with very heavy spells expected between November 28 and 30. Kerala and Mahe may see significant rainfall on November 25 and 26, while coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam and Rayalaseema are expected to get showers from November 29 to December 1. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are likely to receive heavy rain from November 25 to 29.
Districts Under Alert
Several Tamil Nadu districts—including Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Cuddalore and Mayiladuthurai—have been placed on alert for intense spells and possible waterlogging as the system approaches the coast around November 29–30.
Additional Weather Risks
The IMD has also forecast thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds reaching 40–60 km/h in parts of Tamil Nadu between November 25 and 28. Rough sea conditions are expected, and fishermen have been strongly advised to avoid venturing into the sea.
Preparedness Measures
State authorities in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh are monitoring the developing system and have urged residents in vulnerable areas to stay cautious. Emergency teams and district administrations have been asked to be on standby for any weather-related disruptions.
