Cyclone Montha Slams Andhra And Odisha, One Dead, Thousands Evacuated
Cyclone Montha made landfall on India’s east coast late on October 28, battering parts of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha with strong winds and heavy rain. At least one person was killed in Andhra’s Konaseema district when a tree collapsed on a house. Authorities evacuated tens of thousands of people as precautionary measures.
Landfall And Impact
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cyclone crossed the coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam near Kakinada as a Severe Cyclonic Storm with wind speeds of 90–100 km/h and gusts reaching 110 km/h. Around 50,000 people were evacuated to relief shelters across Andhra and Odisha.
Evacuations And Disruptions
In Andhra Pradesh, schools were closed, public movement was restricted and relief camps were activated in coastal districts. Odisha also placed multiple districts on high alert and opened shelters. Widespread flooding, uprooted trees and power outages were reported in several areas.
Outlook And Warnings
While the cyclone weakened after landfall, the IMD has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall in Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Telangana and parts of Maharashtra as the storm moves inland. Residents have been urged to remain indoors and follow disaster management advisories.
