Cyclone Ditwah Leaves 123 Dead In Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka’s Disaster Management Centre has confirmed that at least 123 people have died after Cyclone Ditwah triggered widespread flooding and landslides across multiple districts. More than 130 people are still missing as rescue agencies struggle to reach isolated regions cut off by heavy debris and overflowing rivers.

Thousands Displaced, Homes Destroyed

Officials reported that nearly 44,000 residents have been moved to temporary state-run shelters. Over 15,000 homes have been damaged or destroyed, with several villages suffering severe structural losses as floodwaters swept through low-lying areas.

Emergency Declared To Speed Up Relief

The government has declared a state of emergency, enabling rapid deployment of military units and emergency responders. Helicopter and boat teams continue to evacuate stranded families, while road-clearing operations are underway to restore connectivity.

India Sends Relief Under Sagar Bandhu

India has launched Operation Sagar Bandhu to support the crisis response, dispatching food, medicines and relief materials to Colombo. Regional transport services, schools and administrative activities remain suspended in several districts due to safety concerns.
