Cyclone Ditwah Deep Depression May Recurve Toward Chennai

The deep depression formed from Cyclone Ditwah is expected to change course and move closer to the north Tamil Nadu coast, raising the possibility of heavy rainfall in and around Chennai. Weather officials have issued alerts for four districts as the system continues to intensify over the Bay of Bengal.

System Movement and Forecast

According to the latest updates, the deep depression remains positioned over the southwest Bay of Bengal and may recurve toward the Chennai region. The system is likely to bring strong winds of around 40–60 km/h along with heavy to very heavy rainfall. The districts likely to experience the most intense spells are Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Chengalpattu.

Rainfall Impact Already Visible

Chennai has already witnessed periods of heavy rainfall, leading to waterlogging in several neighbourhoods. Traffic movement slowed down during the morning hours, and authorities in parts of the region declared holidays for schools and colleges as a precaution. Emergency services remain on standby to respond to potential flooding.

Government Measures and Alerts

Red and orange alerts have been issued for the affected districts. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea, and residents in coastal or low-lying areas have been urged to exercise caution. Disaster-response teams and civic agencies have started preparations to manage waterlogging and drainage issues.

What Residents Should Know

Officials have advised the public to stay indoors wherever possible, avoid travel through flooded stretches and keep emergency supplies ready. Continuous monitoring of weather updates is recommended until the system weakens or moves away from the coastline.
