Cyclone ‘Dana’ to Bring Heavy Rainfall in Jharkhand, NDRF Deployed
The cyclonic storm ‘Dana’ is expected to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of Jharkhand starting Thursday night, as per the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).
An ‘orange’ alert has been issued for the Kolhan region, which includes West Singhbhum, Seraikela-Kharswan, and East Singhbhum districts, predicting rainfall between 115 mm to 204 mm within 24 hours. Thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 60 kmph are also anticipated in the region.
Heavy Rainfall and Strong Winds Expected
According to Abhishek Anand, in charge of the Ranchi Meteorological Centre, the cyclonic storm will make landfall early Friday between Bhitarkanika National Park and Dhamra Port in Odisha, with wind speeds up to 120 kmph. The weather system is currently positioned 280 km southeast of Paradip in Odisha and 370 km south-southeast of Sagar Island in West Bengal.
In addition to the Kolhan region, central parts of Jharkhand, including Ranchi, Khunti, Lohardaga, Gumla, and Ramgarh, may also experience heavy rainfall on Friday. Light to moderate rain is expected across the state starting Thursday under the influence of Cyclone ‘Dana’.
NDRF Teams Deployed for Emergency Response
In preparation for the storm’s impact, six National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been deployed in Jamshedpur and Chaibasa, with two additional teams on standby in Ranchi. These teams are positioned to handle any emergency situations that may arise due to the heavy rainfall and strong winds.
Impact on Political Activities
The severe weather is likely to affect ongoing political activities related to the upcoming Jharkhand Assembly elections. The state is set to hold elections in two phases on November 13 and November 20, with vote counting scheduled for November 23. The nomination process for the first phase, which began on October 18, will conclude on October 25, while nominations for the second phase continue until October 29.
As Cyclone ‘Dana’ approaches, authorities remain on high alert, prepared to manage any disruptions caused by the storm across Jharkhand.
