Customs Reform Will Be The Next Big Move – FM Nirmala Sitharaman

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that simplifying customs procedures will be the government’s next major reform initiative. She made the remarks while addressing the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit. According to her, customs processes are still complex and need a complete overhaul to encourage trade and reduce delays.

Focus On Transparency And Ease Of Compliance

Sitharaman stated that the aim of the reform is to make customs more transparent, less discretionary and easier for businesses to comply with. She said that customs duty structures will be reviewed, and areas where duties are considered high may see rationalisation. The minister added that paperwork and clearance procedures will be simplified to match global standards.

Extension Of Earlier Reform Path

The finance minister pointed to previous reforms in income tax and GST, saying they have helped improve compliance and reduce burden on taxpayers. She said that a similar approach will now be applied to customs. The reform will focus on structural and procedural changes, including digitisation and faster clearance.

Reform Expected Ahead Of Budget 2026

The push for customs simplification comes in the run-up to the Union Budget 2026. Officials expect many new proposals to be announced during the budget cycle. The government believes the reform will reduce costs for exporters and importers, improve ease of doing business and support India’s position in global trade.
