COVID-19 Tally in India Rises to 5,364, Kerala, Maharashtra Worst Hit

India has reported a rise in active COVID-19 cases, with the total number reaching 5,364 as of June 6, 2025. A total of 764 new cases and four fatalities were recorded in the past 24 hours. Kerala remains the worst-hit state, followed by Maharashtra, as concerns grow over the spread of a newly emerging variant.

New Variant NB.1.8.1 Driving the Surge

The fresh wave has been linked to the new COVID-19 variant, NB.1.8.1, which is reported to have increased transmissibility. Although most cases are mild, health experts stress that vulnerable populations, especially those with existing health conditions, should take precautions.

Dr. Shashank Joshi, a leading health expert, referred to the current variant as a “great-grandchild” of Omicron—mild in nature, yet persistent in its spread. He urged the public not to panic but to stay alert, especially during the monsoon months when other infections tend to rise.

State-wise Breakdown

  • Kerala: With 192 new cases in a single day, Kerala has the highest number of active infections at 1,679.
  • Maharashtra: Reported 114 new cases and one death, bringing its cumulative toll to 18. Active cases are now over 1,200.
  • Gujarat: Logged 107 new infections, prompting renewed health surveillance.
  • West Bengal: Saw 58 new cases with active numbers nearing 600.
  • Delhi: Registered 30 new infections, keeping its active tally just below 600.

Government and Hospital Preparedness

In response to the rising numbers, the central government has launched mock drills in hospitals across the country to assess readiness. States have been directed to ensure adequate oxygen supply, availability of ventilators, isolation facilities, and critical drugs. Health departments are also reviewing local containment strategies in districts showing an upward trend in infections.

Advisory for Public

The health ministry has urged citizens to maintain COVID-appropriate behavior. People experiencing flu-like symptoms are advised to isolate and seek timely medical attention. While the wave remains under control, officials stress the importance of booster vaccinations, especially for the elderly and immunocompromised individuals.

As India navigates this new phase of COVID-19, continued public cooperation and healthcare vigilance remain key to preventing a larger outbreak.
