Court Upholds ‘A’ Rating for Rajinikanth’s Coolie
The Madras High Court has dismissed a petition from the producers of Coolie, rejecting their request to change the film’s Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) rating from “A” (adults only) to “U/A” (parental guidance for children).
Producers’ Argument
The producers, Sun TV Network, argued that the film complied with CBFC requirements—such as removing obscene language and masking scenes depicting alcohol—and noted that action sequences are commonplace in Tamil cinema. However, the CBFC maintained that Coolie contains excessively violent action scenes, and stated that a U/A rating would only be possible if such scenes were removed.
Court’s Ruling
Justice T. V. Thamil Selvi ruled that the petition lacked merit and upheld the “A” certification, meaning that viewers under 18 are not permitted to watch the film in theaters. The court’s decision ends hopes for a family-friendly theatrical version of Coolie—a significant development given that it is Rajinikanth’s first “A”-certified film in nearly 35 years.
OTT Release Awaited
Fans awaiting a U/A version must now wait for the film’s OTT release, which is expected several weeks after its theatrical run ends.
