Controversy After Alagiri’s ‘Slap Kangana’ Comment
Former Tamil Nadu Congress president KS Alagiri has stirred a political row by suggesting that actor-MP Kangana Ranaut should be slapped if she visits Tamil Nadu. His remarks directed at farm workers came in response to Ranaut’s past comments about women working in agriculture.
Alagiri’s Justification
Alagiri told reporters that agriculturists had approached him upset over Ranaut’s remarks during the 2020 farmers’ protests. He claimed she had said that agricultural women would “come anywhere” for ₹100. He then asked farm workers to act like the CISF constable who slapped her last year at Chandigarh airport, saying such an act would “rectify her mistake.”
Kangana Ranaut’s Response
Ranaut reacted by saying one person’s statement won’t affect her. She asserted that many people support her, particularly in Tamil Nadu, and that she is free to travel anywhere in India. She also mentioned that people praised her for playing J. Jayalalithaa in Thalaivii, calling her “Thalaivii.”
Wider Reactions and Legal Concerns
The comment has led to backlash from political figures and civil society. Some see it as irresponsible rhetoric. No legal action has been reported yet, but debate continues over whether such remarks could incite violence or violate laws around hate speech or incitement.
