Congress Urges Modi Govt to Address Anti-Hindu Violence in Bangladesh

The Indian National Congress has strongly urged the Narendra Modi-led government to intervene diplomatically in response to a disturbing rise in targeted attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh. Expressing grave concern, Congress emphasized that India must not remain a silent spectator as minorities in the neighboring country face widespread violence and discrimination.

The political situation in Bangladesh has grown increasingly unstable following the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024. Since then, there have been over 2,200 reported incidents of communal violence targeting minority communities. Hindu temples have been desecrated, homes have been torched, and dozens have reportedly lost their lives amid the unrest.

Chinmoy Krishna Das Arrest Sparks Outrage

The arrest of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das on sedition charges has further fueled tensions. His detention has drawn sharp criticism from various quarters, with several Indian politicians and civil society organizations demanding his immediate release.

The Ministry of External Affairs has officially raised the issue with Bangladeshi authorities, urging them to protect minority communities and uphold democratic rights such as peaceful assembly. The case has become a rallying point for those highlighting the worsening conditions for Hindus in Bangladesh.

Internationally, concerns have been raised in the British Parliament. Conservative MP Priti Patel and Labour MPs including Barry Gardiner highlighted the violence, with Patel specifically demanding swift international pressure for Das’s release. The UK government, in response, assured that the matter was being closely monitored and reiterated its commitment to religious freedom across the Indo-Pacific region.

Political Leaders Demand Modi Government Act

Back home, political leaders from across the spectrum have demanded action. Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi called the developments “extremely worrying” and urged immediate diplomatic steps. AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal criticized the Modi government for remaining silent on the issue, while Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan condemned the arrest and called for solidarity against anti-Hindu atrocities.

“The silence of the Modi government on the violence against Hindus in Bangladesh is shameful. They must act decisively and ensure that India stands by the side of the persecuted,” said a Congress spokesperson.

As pressure builds both nationally and internationally, the spotlight is now on the Modi administration. There is an increasing demand for a proactive and firm diplomatic stand to ensure the safety of Hindus in Bangladesh and protect the region’s minority rights.
