Congress Questions Dhankhar’s Sudden Resignation
The Congress party has raised serious concerns over the sudden resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on the very first day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament. While Dhankhar officially cited health issues as the reason, Congress leaders have suggested that the real reasons may be political and far more complex.
Sequence of Events Sparks Suspicion
Congress MP Jairam Ramesh questioned the timing of the resignation, pointing out unusual behaviour during the day. He noted that two key Union ministers—JP Nadda and Kiren Rijiju—attended the 12:30 PM Business Advisory Committee meeting chaired by Dhankhar, but were absent without explanation at the critical follow-up meeting at 4:30 PM.
According to Congress, this deliberate absence hinted at an internal rift and lack of coordination, which they believe may have contributed to Dhankhar’s decision to step down.
Appeal to Prime Minister for Clarity
The Opposition has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to provide clarity on the matter. Some leaders even asked the Prime Minister to request Dhankhar to reconsider his decision. While extending respect to Dhankhar’s explanation, the Congress maintains that the suddenness of the move is difficult to accept at face value.
Health Concerns Acknowledged but Not Conclusive
Though Dhankhar, 74, has experienced recent health incidents—such as fainting during a public event and undergoing cardiac observation—Congress leaders argue that such concerns had not previously interfered with his duties. His active schedule on the day of his resignation, including plans for travel, makes the decision all the more puzzling.
What Happens Next
With the Vice President’s post now vacant, Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh is acting as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. The Election Commission is required to hold a new vice-presidential election within 60 days as per constitutional provisions.
As speculation grows, the Congress party’s sharp questions are likely to keep the issue alive well into the coming weeks.
