Congress MP Shashi Tharoor Warns Tariffs Will Hurt Indian Exports

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has strongly criticized the United States’ recent decision to raise tariffs on Indian goods from 25% to 50%, warning that such a move will make Indian exports unaffordable for American consumers. He called the additional penalty a political tactic, rather than a fair economic decision.

Tariffs Spark Tension

The United States had already imposed a 25% tariff on Indian goods earlier. The latest hike comes after India continued to import crude oil from Russia, a move that Washington believes helps fund Moscow’s military operations. India has firmly defended its oil imports, citing national interest and the need for affordable energy for its citizens.

Tharoor: India Not Out of Options

Tharoor said the U.S. demands were unreasonable and warned that India must be ready to walk away from negotiations if its core interests are undermined. He suggested that India consider strengthening trade ties with other global partners if the U.S. continues to impose unfair conditions. He also emphasized that diplomacy should not involve coercion or imbalance.

Opposition Leaders Also Speak Out

Several opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, have questioned the government’s silence on the issue. They demanded that India respond assertively to protect its economy and global image.

Indian Exporters on Edge

The increased tariff could impact multiple Indian industries such as textiles, jewelry, electronics, and pharmaceuticals, which rely heavily on the American market. Exporters fear that the new duties will make their products less competitive, potentially reducing shipments and earnings in the coming months.

Tharoor also addressed earlier remarks by Trump labeling the Indian economy as “dead.” He called the comment inaccurate and offensive, reaffirming that India remains one of the fastest-growing economies in the world.
