Congress Kerala Unit Rejects Shashi Tharoor’s CM Ambition

Kerala’s Congress leadership has pushed back against MP Shashi Tharoor’s announcement that he wants to be the party’s Chief Ministerial candidate in the next state elections. Leaders told Tharoor to “pick the party first,” reminding him that loyalty and collective decisions come before personal ambitions.

Praise for Modi Sparks Criticism

Tharoor recently praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s global outreach following Operation Sindoor, saying Modi’s energy makes him a “prime asset” for India. This rare compliment for a rival leader drew strong criticism from his own party. Kerala Congress leaders said public admiration of the PM was “not correct” and could harm the party’s unity.

Concerns from Within

Senior state Congress figures, including VD Satheesan and KM Muraleedharan, stressed that leadership choices are for the national party to decide. Satheesan called public declarations “undisciplined,” while Muraleedharan questioned Tharoor’s allegiance, suggesting he decide whether he wants to stay in Congress. Meanwhile, Ramesh Chennithala dismissed Tharoor’s self-promotion as a ploy by rival groups, warning it could create confusion among supporters.

Party’s Strategic Response

The Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) has chosen to address the issue quietly, avoiding public confrontation. It notably did not invite Tharoor to campaign in Nilambur, a move seen as a message to the MP to align more closely with the party. KPCC leaders said they wanted to prevent further internal discord but stressed that Tharoor’s actions would be monitored, especially during important elections.

Tharoor’s Position

Tharoor responded by reaffirming his loyalty to Congress but stated he will continue voicing national concerns. A social media survey circulated by him showed strong public support for his possible elevation, but party leaders warn such initiatives may be politically unhelpful. With the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections approaching, maintaining cohesion and discipline remains a top priority for Congress.
