Congress Criticizes “MEGA” Strategy
The Indian National Congress has strongly attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “MAGA + MIGA = MEGA” idea, which combined the U.S. slogan “Make America Great Again” with India’s “Make in India.” The party said this has now become a “MAHA headache” for India after the U.S. imposed steep tariffs on Indian exports.
Tariff Hike Hits Labour-Intensive Sectors
Congress communications chief Jairam Ramesh warned that the new double tariffs from the United States would hit India’s labour-driven export sectors the hardest. Textiles, gems and jewellery, leather, marine products, and engineering goods are among the industries expected to face the most serious strain.
U.S. Also Targets H-1B Visas
Ramesh also flagged remarks from the U.S. Commerce Secretary, who called the H-1B visa program a “scam.” With Indian IT professionals forming the majority of H-1B visa holders, this stance has sparked concerns about worsening opportunities for Indian workers in the U.S. market.
Modi’s Approach Under Pressure
Congress said that Modi’s diplomatic pitch of aligning with U.S. priorities has backfired. What was once showcased as a bold “MEGA” vision is now, according to the opposition, turning into an economic burden, exposing India to higher tariffs and uncertainty in trade ties.
