Congress Calls Modi’s Praise For Bhagwat ‘Desperate Bid’

On Mohan Bhagwat’s 75th birthday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi published an article praising him as a “living example of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” and for his leadership since 2009. Modi also called Bhagwat’s tenure one of transformation for the RSS.

Congress Response

The Congress party, led by Jairam Ramesh, criticized Modi’s tribute as “over-the-top.” It called the praise a “desperate bid to curry favour” with RSS leadership.

Criticism Over Selectivity

Congress pointed out that Modi referenced Swami Vivekananda’s 1893 Chicago speech and the 9/11 attacks of 2001, both of which occurred on September 11, but omitted mention of India’s Satyagraha launch on the same date. This selectivity was questioned as politically motivated.

Political Implications

Opposition believes the article is aimed at RSS’s hierarchy—possibly as an insurance measure ahead of internal Sangh decisions or party leadership judgments. Some see it as an attempt by Modi to secure standing with RSS cadres ahead of future decisions.

Broader Debate

The tribute has triggered renewed debate over the retirement age norm of 75 applied in RSS, and whether political leaders may expect exceptions. Concerns were expressed about using reverence as political strategy rather than genuine acknowledgment.
