Congress Attacks Centre on US Trade Pact

The Congress on Wednesday criticised the Centre over the interim India-US trade understanding, alleging the agreement favours Washington more than New Delhi and questioning the benefits for domestic sectors.

India US trade agreement criticism from Congress

The opposition described the pact as unequal, arguing the United States secured greater concessions in tariffs and market access. Party leaders said the arrangement amounted to India giving away leverage without receiving proportionate gains, claiming Washington extracted more from negotiations.

The remarks came amid continuing political sparring over the contours of the interim trade framework announced after bilateral talks. The government has maintained the deal will expand export opportunities and improve market access for Indian goods.

Political reaction to trade pact

Congress leaders said the agreement could undermine domestic industry and agriculture if safeguards are inadequate. They argued the framework risks opening India’s markets to cheaper imports while offering limited reciprocal benefits.

The criticism follows earlier opposition statements warning the pact may affect farmers and small businesses and calling for transparency on tariff commitments and sector-wise concessions.

Government stance on bilateral trade talks

The Centre has defended negotiations, stating sensitive sectors remain protected and benefits include improved export access to the US market. Officials have highlighted ongoing discussions and described the deal as a step toward a broader trade arrangement.

Both countries aim to deepen economic ties through phased agreements covering tariffs, goods and services, while further details are expected in subsequent negotiations.
