Congress Accuses BJP of Politicizing Operation Sindoor

In a significant escalation of political tensions, the Indian National Congress has accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of politicizing Operation Sindoor, a military operation launched in response to the Pahalgam terror attack. The Congress alleges that the BJP is leveraging the operation for electoral gains, thereby undermining the apolitical nature of the armed forces.

Operation Sindoor

Operation Sindoor was initiated by the Indian Armed Forces following the Pahalgam terror attack, which resulted in the loss of 26 lives. The operation aimed to target and dismantle terrorist camps and infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The Congress contends that the BJP is using this military action as a political tool, rather than recognizing it as a national security measure executed by the armed forces.

Congress Criticizes BJP’s Approach

Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh criticized the BJP for allegedly politicizing Operation Sindoor. He pointed out that Prime Minister Narendra Modi plans to meet only Chief Ministers from NDA-ruled states to discuss the operation, excluding those from opposition-led states. Ramesh questioned this selective engagement, suggesting it indicates a politicization of national security matters.

Furthermore, the Congress raised concerns about the government’s silence on former U.S. President Donald Trump’s claims of mediating a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. The party questioned why the Prime Minister and the External Affairs Minister have not addressed these assertions, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability in matters of national security.

‘Jai Hind’ Rallies Announced

In response to the BJP’s ‘Tiranga Yatras’—patriotic rallies celebrating Operation Sindoor—the Congress announced plans to organize ‘Jai Hind’ rallies across multiple cities. These events aim to counter what the party terms as ‘Sindoor politics’ and to demand answers from the Prime Minister on various foreign policy and national security issues. The rallies are expected to feature participation from senior Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, who is scheduled to address a press conference on May 16.

Broader Political Implications

The political discourse further intensified following controversial remarks by Madhya Pradesh Minister Kunwar Vijay Shah, who referred to Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, a key figure in Operation Sindoor, in a manner perceived as communal and derogatory. The Congress condemned the statement as an insult to the armed forces and called for Shah’s dismissal.

The BJP, on its part, has lauded Operation Sindoor as a testament to Prime Minister Modi’s decisive leadership, emphasizing the government’s commitment to national security. However, the opposition continues to challenge the narrative, urging for a non-partisan approach to matters of national defense.

As the political landscape becomes increasingly charged, the debate over Operation Sindoor underscores the complexities of balancing national security imperatives with the dynamics of electoral politics.
