“Condemn Terrorism as a Principle, Not a Convenience,” Says PM Modi at BRICS Summit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi issued a forceful call for a consistent and principled global stand against terrorism during his address at the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro. Speaking at the session on “Peace and Security and Reform of Global Governance,” Modi urged that terrorism should be condemned universally—not selectively—regardless of geography or political alignment.
He made a direct reference to the Pahalgam terror attack of April 22, which killed 26 people, calling it not just an assault on India but on humanity as a whole. Modi emphasized that double standards in responding to acts of terror amount to betrayal.
“Condemning terror should be our principle, not just a convenience. If we first see in which country an attack took place and against whom, it will be a betrayal of humanity,” he stated.
Modi stressed that nations offering any form of support to terrorism—be it financial, logistical, or through safe havens—must face consequences. He warned that equating victims with perpetrators or avoiding condemnation for strategic reasons undermines global security and moral integrity.
He welcomed BRICS’ unified stand in condemning the Pahalgam attack and called for specific action, including sanctions against countries that aid or abet terrorism. He described terrorism as a “grave threat to humanity” and said collective action was essential to dismantle its global networks.
In addition to his focus on terrorism, the Prime Minister also advocated for urgent reforms in international institutions. He called for greater representation for the Global South in global decision-making platforms, arguing that outdated structures no longer reflect present-day geopolitical realities.
Modi reiterated India’s commitment to being a responsible global actor and encouraged BRICS members to champion fairness, transparency, and accountability in matters of global governance.
