Communal Tensions Flare in Pune’s Yavat Village

Communal unrest broke out in Yavat village of Pune’s Daund taluka following a social media post by a non-local resident that allegedly hurt religious sentiments. The incident led to vandalism, arson, and a large-scale police response.

What Triggered the Violence

The conflict began after a youth from Nanded, residing in Yavat, shared a WhatsApp status that allegedly insulted a Hindu priest. The post quickly went viral and angered members of the local community, prompting attacks on properties linked to another religious group. A bakery, a religious site, vehicles, and a house were targeted. No injuries were reported.

Police Response and Arrests

Police have filed five FIRs in connection with the violence, naming over 500 individuals. So far, 17 people have been detained, including the youth who posted the WhatsApp message. A local court has sent 15 of them to judicial custody till August 6. The youth is being charged for promoting enmity between communities and hurting religious sentiments.

Security Measures and Internet Ban

To bring the situation under control, police enforced Section 144 to ban public gatherings and suspended internet services in the area to prevent misinformation. Drones were deployed for surveillance, and continuous police patrolling is underway. Quick response teams and state reserve forces have been stationed in sensitive locations.

Politicians Visit, Appeal for Calm

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and other political leaders visited the village and appealed to residents to remain peaceful. They warned against spreading hate through social media and assured strict legal action against those responsible.

Past Incident Heightens Sensitivity

Tensions in Yavat had already been on edge after a recent incident involving the desecration of a statue of Shivaji Maharaj. Authorities believe that the previous unrest may have increased the community’s sensitivity, leading to the rapid escalation.
