Cloudburst in Kishtwar Kills Over 50, Dozens Missing

A devastating cloudburst in Chositi village, located on the Machail Mata pilgrimage route, has claimed at least 56 lives. More than 300 people have been rescued, while over 250 remain missing. The disaster struck around 11:30 a.m., catching pilgrims and locals off guard during lunch near a community kitchen and security post.

Disaster Strikes Harshly

The sudden downpour triggered flash floods that destroyed homes, swept away langar facilities, and damaged a CRPF camp. Floodwaters also caused significant destruction in downstream areas, which were crowded with pilgrims for the annual yatra.

Massive Rescue Operation Underway

Rescue operations are in full swing, with teams from the NDRF, SDRF, Army, Air Force, police, and local volunteers working in challenging weather and terrain. More than 50 people are reported to be in critical condition in hospitals. Continuous rain and debris are making search operations difficult.

Pilgrimage Suspended and Leadership Reacts

The Machail Mata Yatra has been suspended. Leaders including the Prime Minister, Lieutenant Governor, and Chief Minister have expressed condolences and assured that all possible assistance will be provided. Independence Day celebrations in the region have been cancelled in view of the tragedy.
