Cloudburst in Kishtwar Claiming Dozens of Lives
A sudden cloudburst struck Chasoti village in Jammu & Kashmir’s remote Kishtwar district, triggering devastating flash floods during the Machail Mata pilgrimage. The disaster has claimed dozens of lives and injured many more.
Death Toll and Casualties
Initial estimates confirmed at least 38 fatalities, including two CISF personnel. Dozens of others were wounded, many severely. Rescue teams report that over 200 people remain missing amid debris and raging waters.
Rescue and Relief Efforts
Relief operations are underway, with NDRF, SDRF, police, and army teams deployed alongside local volunteers. A control room has been set up at Paddar to coordinate aid and information. Hospitals in Atholi and Kishtwar are treating the injured, while relief supplies and personnel are being airlifted where roads are inaccessible.
Impacted Pilgrimage and Infrastructure
The Machail Mata Yatra has been suspended. The flash flood swept away a community kitchen (langar), structures, and key infrastructure en route to the shrine. Ongoing torrential rains and rough terrain are hampering rescue.
Political Response and Public Mourning
Political leaders, including the Prime Minister, Home Minister, Jammu & Kashmir’s Lieutenant Governor, and Chief Minister, expressed condolences and assured full support for relief operations. Independence Day cultural events have been cancelled in Kishtwar in mourning.
