Close aide named in police case as Karur rally stampede kills 39

A police case has been filed against senior leaders of Vijay’s party after a stampede at a rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, left 39 dead and over 50 injured. The case lists N Anand (also known as Bussy Anand), TVK’s general secretary and a close associate of Vijay, among the accused. Also named are CT Nirmal Kumar and Karur district secretary Mathiyazhagan.

Authorities have charged them under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita addressing culpable homicide not amounting to murder, negligent conduct endangering life, and disobedience to public servants. The Tamil Nadu Public Property (Prevention of Damage and Loss) Act is also invoked. In response, the state government accused TVK of violating safety guidelines, especially in managing drinking water and crowd control.

The stampede occurred during election campaigning for Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). Police contend that while permission was sought for 10,000 attendees, more than double that number gathered. The large crowd, delayed arrival of Vijay, and inadequate infrastructure reportedly overwhelmed arrangements.

Compensation of ₹10 lakh has been promised to each deceased’s family. A judicial commission led by a retired judge is examining causes and recommending accountability. Vijay expressed deep grief and pledged support to victims’ families, while national and state leaders have condemned the tragedy.
