CJP, Opposition Criticise CJI Remarks
The CJP and several Opposition leaders have criticised Chief Justice of India Surya Kant’s remarks while the Supreme Court declined an urgent hearing on alleged police action during the July 20 student protest in Delhi.
CJP Criticises Supreme Court Remarks
The controversy began after a lawyer sought urgent intervention over allegations that police used excessive force against students participating in the CJP-led protest. Counsel offered to present videos purportedly documenting the police action.
The Chief Justice said the bench was not interested in viewing the videos and asked the lawyer not to waste the court’s time. The court declined the request for urgent listing but did not rule on the merits of the allegations.
CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke responded to the development with a series of question marks on social media. Party spokesperson Saurav Das described the remarks as arrogant and said the Supreme Court deserved better.
Opposition Questions Access to Justice
Aam Aadmi Party leader Somnath Bharti said the response raised broader questions about access to justice. He argued that constitutional courts should patiently hear serious allegations involving the treatment of students, even if they ultimately decide against the petitioners.
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi reacted sarcastically with a one-word social media post describing the development as “amazing”.
No formal response to the criticism was immediately issued by the Supreme Court.
Jantar Mantar Protest Controversy
The plea concerned police action during Monday’s “Sansad Chalo” march, when thousands of protesters attempted to move towards Parliament. They were demanding accountability over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
The demonstration became violent after protesters attempted to breach barricades. Police used batons and tear gas to disperse the crowd, while injuries were reported among both demonstrators and security personnel.
