CJI Surya Kant Inaugurates Ladakh High Court Bench
The new High Court Bench, located at Melangthong in Leh, aims to reduce the difficulties faced by residents who previously had to travel to Jammu or Srinagar for High Court proceedings.
Speaking at the inauguration, Justice Surya Kant highlighted the financial and logistical challenges confronting litigants, particularly during winter when mountain routes become inaccessible.
He emphasised that the Bench must serve residents of both Leh and Kargil, ensuring equal access to judicial services across Ladakh.
Supreme Court Plans Dedicated Hearings for Ladakh Cases
Justice Surya Kant announced that once adequate video-conferencing facilities become available, the Supreme Court would list cases originating from Ladakh together on a designated day.
The proposed arrangement would allow lawyers practising in Leh and Kargil to present arguments before the Supreme Court remotely, reducing travel expenses and delays.
The CJI also indicated that hearings could continue on successive days through video conferencing when required.
Ladakh High Court Bench to Expand Digital Justice
The Chief Justice emphasised the importance of electronic filing, digital communication and legal assistance in improving access to justice.
He called for strengthening e-Sewa Kendras, legal awareness programmes, Lok Adalats and free legal aid services, particularly for residents of remote villages.
The establishment of the Bench follows a presidential regulation issued on August 28, 2026, permitting its creation.
Located approximately 3,500 metres above sea level, the new Bench represents a significant development in Ladakh’s judicial infrastructure, bringing High Court proceedings closer to local communities.
