CJI Says Justice Resides in District Courts

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant has said that true justice largely resides in district courts, stressing their central role in delivering justice to ordinary citizens. He noted that for most people, district courts are the first and most important point of contact with the judicial system.

District Courts Are Not “Lower” Courts

The CJI said referring to district courts as “lower courts” is misleading and undermines their importance. He described them as a vital pillar of the judiciary, responsible for handling the bulk of cases and ensuring access to justice at the grassroots level.

Support for Grassroots Judiciary

Surya Kant underlined the need to strengthen district courts through better infrastructure, judicial manpower, and administrative support. He said improving the functioning of these courts would have a direct impact on reducing delays and improving public trust in the justice system.

Encouraging Young Lawyers

The Chief Justice also urged young lawyers to consider practising in district courts, saying early exposure at this level helps build strong legal skills and a deeper understanding of the justice delivery process.
