CJI Office Received 8630 Complaints Against Judges

The Law Ministry informed Parliament that 8,630 complaints were received against sitting judges of the higher judiciary over the past decade, highlighting the scale of grievances handled within the judicial oversight framework.

Complaints Against Sitting Judges Data

According to the information shared, complaints were submitted against judges of the Supreme Court and High Courts between 2014 and 2024. The government clarified that these complaints are processed through an in-house mechanism established by the judiciary to examine allegations.

Authorities noted that not all complaints lead to further action, as each submission undergoes scrutiny to determine credibility and relevance.

Judicial In House Procedure For Complaints

The in-house procedure allows complaints to be reviewed by senior judges, who decide whether an inquiry is required. The system is designed to maintain judicial independence while providing a mechanism for accountability.

If allegations are found to have substance, further steps may be recommended, including advisories or other internal measures consistent with judicial norms.

Law Ministry Statement On Judicial Accountability

The Law Ministry said it does not directly investigate judges due to constitutional provisions ensuring separation of powers. Instead, complaints are forwarded to the appropriate judicial authorities for examination.

The disclosure was made in response to a parliamentary query seeking details on oversight and grievance handling concerning members of the higher judiciary.
