CJI Gavai Recommends Justice Surya Kant As His Successor

Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai has formally recommended Justice Surya Kant as his successor. The recommendation has been sent to the Union Law Ministry, following the established convention of appointing the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court as the next Chief Justice.

Appointment Details

Justice Surya Kant, who is currently the senior-most judge after CJI Gavai, is set to become the 53rd Chief Justice of India. He will assume office on November 24, 2025, a day after Justice Gavai retires on November 23.

Tenure Expectations

Justice Surya Kant will serve until his retirement on February 9, 2027, giving him a tenure of nearly 15 months. Born in Hisar, Haryana, he has previously served as Advocate General of Haryana, Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court, and has been a judge of the Supreme Court since May 2019.

Significance

The appointment will continue the tradition of seniority in judicial succession. Justice Surya Kant’s tenure is expected to play a significant role in handling key constitutional and legal matters pending before the Supreme Court.
