CJI Gavai Bids Farewell With Satisfaction

Chief Justice of India B. R. Gavai delivered his farewell remarks at the Supreme Court on November 21, saying he was leaving the institution “as a student of justice” and with a “full sense of satisfaction.” He will formally retire on November 23, 2025, completing a tenure that began on May 14, 2025.

A Career Spanning Four Decades

Justice Gavai began his legal practice in 1985 and went on to serve as a judge of the Bombay High Court before being elevated to the Supreme Court in 2019. He became the 52nd Chief Justice of India earlier this year. He is also noted as the first Buddhist and the second person from a Scheduled Caste community to hold the office of Chief Justice.

Farewell Remarks In Court

During the ceremonial bench, Justice Gavai thanked the Bar and his colleagues, stating that his journey in law began as a learner and ends with the same humility. Members of the legal community applauded him with a standing ovation as he concluded his final day in court.

Legacy And Judicial Impact

Though his tenure as CJI was brief, Justice Gavai focused on inclusivity, court accessibility and strengthening constitutional values. His leadership emphasized efficiency and improving the delivery of justice. The Supreme Court now transitions to a new phase under his successor, with pending reforms and systemic challenges still needing attention.
