CJI Chandrachud Reflects on Ayodhya Dispute, Expresses Faith in Divine Solution

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, while addressing residents of his native village Kanhersar in Maharashtra’s Khed taluka on Sunday, spoke about his personal reflections on the historic Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute.

Recalling the time the case was before him, the Chief Justice shared that he prayed for divine intervention to help find a resolution to the century-old conflict.

Faith Amid Legal Challenges

Speaking candidly during the felicitation event, CJI Chandrachud said, “Very often we have cases to adjudicate, but we don’t arrive at a solution. Something similar happened during the Ayodhya dispute, which was in front of me for three months. I sat before the deity and told him he needs to find a solution.” Emphasizing the power of faith, he added that God always provides a way if one believes.

The Chief Justice was part of the five-judge bench that delivered the landmark verdict on November 9, 2019, which allowed the construction of the Ram temple at the disputed site in Ayodhya. The Supreme Court also ruled that an alternative five-acre plot in Ayodhya would be allocated for building a mosque.

A Historic Verdict and Personal Connection

In July 2023, CJI Chandrachud visited the Ram Temple in Ayodhya to offer prayers, underscoring his personal connection to the case. The temple’s idol consecration ceremony, held in January this year, was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Reflecting on his experiences, CJI Chandrachud’s words highlighted the intersection of faith and justice, a theme that resonates deeply with the historic Ayodhya verdict that ended a decades-long legal battle.
