Chinese Envoy Visit Near Teesta Raises Strategic Concerns
Bangladesh’s interim government led by Muhammad Yunus facilitated a visit by the Chinese ambassador to areas linked to the Teesta River project in northern Bangladesh, close to India’s strategically sensitive Siliguri Corridor, often referred to as the “Chicken’s Neck.” The visit has drawn attention in New Delhi due to the proximity of the site to one of India’s most critical geographic chokepoints.
Why the Location Matters
The Siliguri Corridor is a narrow stretch of land that connects mainland India to its northeastern states. Any foreign presence or activity near this corridor is closely monitored by Indian security planners because of its military and logistical importance.
Bangladesh’s Official Position
Bangladeshi authorities have described the visit as a technical review related to the proposed Teesta River management and restoration project, in which China is expected to play a role. Officials have maintained that the visit had no strategic or security intent and was limited to development-related discussions.
Regional Implications
India and Bangladesh have held long-running but unresolved talks on Teesta water sharing. China’s involvement in projects linked to the river has added a strategic dimension to an already sensitive issue, prompting India to keep a close watch on developments in the region.
