Chinese Envoy Highlights Key Understandings from Modi-Xi Meeting
Following a significant bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Russia, Chinese Ambassador to India Xu Feihong stated that “many important understandings” were reached to guide future India-China relations.
Xu’s comments come a week after India announced a patrolling agreement with China in Eastern Ladakh’s Demchok and Depsang regions, aiming to ease longstanding border tensions.
Ambassador Xu Feihong emphasized the importance of the meeting between the two leaders, describing it as a foundational moment for fostering smoother relations. “The understandings between President Xi and Prime Minister Modi will serve as guidelines for advancing relations between our countries,” Xu said during a recent visit to Kolkata. “Under this consensus, I hope our relations will progress smoothly, without being hindered by specific disagreements.”
Focus on Managing Differences and Future Cooperation
Acknowledging that differences between neighboring countries are natural, Xu stressed the importance of how such issues are handled, adding that the Modi-Xi discussions serve as a model for managing these challenges diplomatically. He also voiced optimism about the resumption of direct flights between India and China, which were suspended in 2020, noting that this would enhance convenience for travelers and support closer ties.
Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation Across Sectors
On the subject of trade and cultural exchange, Xu expressed hope for stronger cooperation in various areas, including business, education, and science. His statements reflect a renewed diplomatic effort from both nations to navigate shared challenges, with potential benefits for future cross-border cooperation and stability in the region.
