China’s Rare Earth Magnet Exports Fall in September

China’s exports of rare earth magnets dropped by 6.1% in September compared to August, with volumes falling to 5,774 metric tons from 6,146 tons. This marked the end of a three-month growth streak.

Year-On-Year Growth

Despite the monthly dip, shipments were still 17.5% higher than the same month last year, highlighting continuing strong global demand for rare earth magnets.

Tighter Export Scrutiny

Analysts said the slowdown is linked to tighter export licensing and increased checks on shipments, especially those tied to defence and semiconductor industries. Earlier in October, China expanded restrictions on rare earths and permanent magnets, adding pressure on global supply chains.

Key Importers

Germany, South Korea, Vietnam, the United States and Mexico remained among the top buyers of Chinese rare earth magnets in September.

Cumulative Decline This Year

From January to September 2025, China exported 39,817 tons of rare earth magnets, down 7.5% compared to the same period in 2024.
