China Welcomes PM Modi to SCO Summit
China has officially welcomed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, scheduled in Tianjin on August 31 and September 1, 2025. A Chinese spokesperson described the event as a “summit of friendship” aimed at promoting unity, cooperation, and meaningful outcomes among member nations.
Significance of the Invitation
This visit will be PM Modi’s first trip to China since the 2020 Galwan Valley clash, which had strained bilateral relations. The SCO meeting provides an opportunity for India and China to enhance communication, address differences, and rebuild trust.
What’s Expected at the Summit
The Tianjin summit is set to be the largest in SCO history, with participation from over 20 national leaders and 10 international organizations. As the current chair, China has outlined the themes of solidarity, dynamism, and high-quality development for the gathering.
What Lies Ahead for India
PM Modi’s attendance could open the door for a potential bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Possible topics for discussion include easing border tensions, reopening trade routes, resuming direct flights, and strengthening cultural and people-to-people exchanges. Such talks could signal a gradual thaw in India-China ties, with the SCO platform serving as a starting point for renewed cooperation
